Admissions Requirements
When it comes to admissions requirements for associate degree programs, there usually aren’t nearly as many requirements as there are for bachelor’s or graduate programs. There are often still a few hoops you have to jump through, though, before you can become an official student at any college.

There should be a tab specifically for admissions, and it should provide you with a specific list of requirements for both new freshman students and transfer students.
The following requirements are pretty standard at every college, even those with open admissions policies.
Application
Filling out an application is pretty much a given at any particular college. Without submitting an application, a college doesn’t even know you’re interested in attending. Applications are almost exclusively online these days, but there are a few schools scattered across the country that still accept paper applications.
The information most schools want you to provide on a college application is pretty standard. They’ll probably want your name, birthday, and other personal information for identification purposes. They’ll also need contact information and likely emergency contact information as well.
You’ll probably also be asked to declare a major. General studies is an accepted major, so you don’t need to panic if you see this question. The application may also ask you questions about your GPA, class rank, or standardized test scores.
Select schools may even require you to write a personal essay and attach it to your application. You’ll probably be asked to discuss yourself, your background, and why you want to attend college at that particular university.
Transcripts
Transcripts are another thing that almost every college asks for. You may need to include your high school transcripts as well as transcripts from any colleges you’ve previously attended.
You can usually request a copy of your transcripts directly from your high school. This is typically something that the current high school counselor or registrar can mail out for you. They may or may not charge you a nominal fee to do so. If your school has closed down or you’ve been out of school for several years, you may have to go to the board of education instead.
College transcripts can be requested through the registrar’s office at all your previous colleges. Again, they may or may not charge you a fee for sending out your transcripts.
Application Fee
This may not be required at all colleges, but many schools do require students to pay an application fee when sending in an application. They may do this as a way of seeing which students are serious about attending college at their specific universities. For instance, there may be several schools you’re interested in but only one or two seriously considering enrolling in.
Requiring a fee is one of the ways that colleges weed out those who are not serious about attending and limit wasted time and resources. Students are not as likely to pay application fees for colleges they’re not serious about attending.
If paying an application fee presents a genuine financial hardship to you, most schools allow applicants to request a fee waiver. If you’re still in high school, you can get help with this from your high school guidance counselor.
If you’re an adult looking to go back to college, though, this may be a little trickier, but it certainly isn’t impossible. You can reach out to the school’s admissions office and talk to someone directly about getting your application fee waived.
The admissions officer may ask that you provide him or her with a copy of your income taxes, disability forms, W-2s, or something similar to verify that you have a genuine financial need. With proof of financial hardship, many schools will waive application fees.
Financial Aid
There are three main types of financial aid that can help you pay for your college education. These are loans, grants, and scholarships. Loans can be acquired from banks, credit unions, or private loan institutions.
The best place to find student loans is typically from the federal government because these loans usually have the best interest rates and may have some additional perks when it comes to repayment options. You can apply for these types of loans and the Federal Pell Grant by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Those who qualify for either the Federal Pell Grant or federal loans are typically notified within a few days, usually by email. Federal loans must be repaid, but the Pell Grant is simply free money you don’t have to repay as long as it isn’t misused. In this way, it is much like a scholarship. As a general rule, scholarships also do not have to be repaid as long as they aren’t abused.
You can often find scholarships on a college’s website under the financial aid tab. These are usually school-specific scholarships that can only be awarded to students attending that particular school.
